Lieutenant General George C. Axtell served four combat tours during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Navy Cross; Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with Combat “V” and three Gold Stars; Distinguished Flying Cross with one Gold Star; and an Air Medal with one Silver Star.
