The Honorable C. Gus Kwidis (Deceased), 1962 Graduate
The Honorable C. Gus Kwidis was a first-generation son of Greek immigrants from Chios, Greece. He was a graduate of Ambridge High School class of 1962 and received his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University and his law degree from The University of Toledo.
During Gus’s adolescent years, he was a paperboy walking up and down the streets of Ambridge and spending much of his summer’s working for his Uncle George’s painting company.
As the first Greek American member of the Beaver County Bar Association, he began working as a law clerk for the late Judge Rowley from 1969-1971. After completing his clerkship, he worked as an Assistant Public Defender for a year before joining the District Attorney’s office in 1972. From 1972 – 1976, he was also an associate in the law firm of Wallover, Reed & Steff. He established his own practice in 1976 and for the next 25 years primarily engaged in the defense of civil liability claims. During that time, he served as solicitor for a number of local municipalities and McGuire Memorial Home.
Judge Kwidis was appointed to the bench of the Beaver County Court of Common Pleas in 2001 by Governor Tom Ridge as the first Greek American to the Court. He then retained the seat through election and eventual retention, retiring as a Senior Judge in 2020. He often said being a judge was the pinnacle of his legal career. He was recognized in 2019 by the Beaver County Bar Association for achieving a remarkable 50 year tenure in the legal profession.
He was a caring, genuine, and humble man who thrived on practicing law and was passionate about upholding the integrity of the law as Judge. As a civil attorney, he enjoyed studying the law and was always prepared to represent his clients. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and love for the law, whether through his cases, the mock trial program or Law Day, and always made an effort to add some levity to a situation. He was proud to have the privilege of officiating countless weddings. Throughout his career, he was a fixture at the courthouse; known for always being well dressed and approachable.
He was also charitable, devoting many hours to the boards of the McGuire Memorial Home and Seven Oaks Country Club. He served as the past president of the Beaver County Bar Association and as chanter and past council president of his church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox in Ambridge, PA.
Judge Kwidis enjoyed golfing, doing yard work, relaxing by the pool, listening to oldies, having a good meal and a cup of coffee, and spending time with his family.
